Silage Leachate

Stainless steel pumps for silage leachate

Silage leachate is a fermentation juice mixed with rainwater that is produced during the ensiling and storage of silage.

The nutrients and minerals as well as the oxygen-consuming properties of silage leachate can significantly impair the quality of water.

The leachate must therefore not be allowed to enter surface waters or groundwater. For this reason, the leachate must be collected in a sealed pit and pumped out regulary.

Due to the release of fermentation acids from the silo and the further fermentation of organic matter, silo leachate has very low pH values (3.8 to 4.5) and is therefore highly corrosive, which is why the wastewater pumps must be made of high-quality stainless steel (1.4436, 1.4517). O-rings should be made of Viton (FPM) and the mechanical seal of silicon carbide.
